Tameside Libraries: So Much More than Books

Date Released - 14/10/2022

A TAMESIDE library is about so much more than books. Each one is not only a cyber-centre but a customer services hub too. It’s the place to go for help and advice in tackling a wide variety of council-related issues.

All eight libraries offer free use of computers, wi-fi and the internet. If you’re unsure about using a PC, there’s also free advice on how to get online and sign up for your own email account.

Scanners and photocopiers are available and each site is accessible to the disabled.

However, that’s only the opening page. There’s a whole host of other support available in dealing with customer services matters.

At your local library you can pay your council tax by card or cheque and request copies of bills, submit or get a blue badge application form, use a PC to apply for housing benefit or have supporting documents verified, and pay telecare (card-only) and homecare charges.

You can also report missed bin collections, order a replacement bin, pick up a bins calendar or green kitchen-waste bags, and request and pay for bulky waste collection (by card).

Libraries are also the place to report fly-tipping and street-lighting issues and to request a council service.

Cllr Sangita Patel, Tameside Council’s assistant executive member for culture, heritage and digital inclusivity, said: “While a huge range of books – both paper and electronic versions – will always quite rightly be at the heart of the service, a trip to your local library is the best way to deal with a wide variety of issues.

“Our friendly and helpful staff have been fully trained in customer services matters. If by chance they’re unable to deal with your request on the spot, they’ll find out who can and direct you to the support you need.”

For people who have difficulty accessing their local library, need specialist advice on housing benefit and council tax issues, including help to make a claim, or for any further advice and support, the council’s customer services team is available.
